Rocket City Slugs Its Way Into First Place With Historic 18-9 Win Over Lookouts, magic number do

CHATTANOOGA, TN — The Rocket City Trash Pandas (34-31, 69-64) collected 21 hits and belted three home runs in an 18-9 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts (21-44, 58-76) on Wednesday night at Erlanger Park, lowering their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to three. Coupled with Birmingham's 4-3 victory over Knoxville earlier in the day, the win moved Rocket City a half-game ahead of the Smokies atop the Southern League North Division second-half standings with four games remaining. With Knoxville already assured a postseason berth as the first-half champion, any combination of Trash Pandas wins and Birmingham losses totaling three will send Rocket City to the playoffs.

Jake Thompson led the offensive Outburst, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and a career-high six RBI while finishing a triple shy of the cycle. The six-RBI game was the first by a Trash Pandas since Trey Cabbage had six on May 6, 2022, against Chattanooga. Every Rocket City batter recorded a hit as the Trash Pandas scored their most runs this season and second-most in franchise history, trailing only a 26-3 victory at Chattanooga's former home, AT&T Field, on August 8, 2021.

The Trash Pandas followed Tuesday's 11-6 victory with their first consecutive double-digit scoring games since April 13–15, 2023, when they scored 13, 11 and 10 runs in three straight wins at Birmingham. Wednesday's 21 hits were their most since collecting 23 at Birmingham on May 18, 2022.

Rocket City needed that production in a game that remained close through six innings.

Chattanooga took a 2-0 lead against Trash Pandas starter Austin Gordon, scoring on a first-inning wild pitch following Carlos Sanchez's leadoff triple before Ruben Ibarra homered to open the second.

The Trash Pandas answered with six runs, all with two outs, in the third. Thompson worked an 11-pitch walk and Anthony Scull singled before Nick Rodríguez launched a three-run homer to left off Javier Rivera, putting Rocket City ahead.

The blast was Rodríguez's fourth of the season and first since July 9 against Chattanooga at Toyota Field. Three of his four homers have come against the Lookouts, including his June 14 shot at Erlanger Park.

Jake Munroe followed with a triple, and Jacob Cozart was hit by a pitch after Bryce Hubbart entered in relief. Caleb Bartolero singled home Munroe, Cozart scored during a wild-pitch sequence, and Tucker Flint added an RBI single to make it 6-2.

Chattanooga pulled even with four runs in the fourth. Alfredo Duno singled home Carter Graham before Austin Hendrick's two-out, three-run homer tied the game at 6-6.

Rocket City immediately reclaimed the lead in the fifth. Consecutive singles from Munroe, Cozart and Bartolero produced the go-ahead run before Thompson delivered a two-out, two-run double off Stephen Quigley for a 9-6 advantage.

The Lookouts kept answering. Sanchez homered to begin the fifth, ending Gordon's outing, and Hendrick added an RBI single against Jose Gonzalez in the sixth to cut the margin to 9-8.

From there, the Trash Pandas scored nine runs over the final three innings to pull away.

Flint opened the seventh with his 14th home run of the season, giving him homers in consecutive games and extending his franchise career record to 45. Thirteen of those have come against Chattanooga, including eight this season. Rodríguez added a two-out RBI single later in the inning to push the lead to 11-8.

Thompson delivered the biggest swing of the late innings, launching a two-out, three-run homer to right-center off Steffon Moore in the eighth. His fifth homer gave Rocket City seven through the first two games of the series and a 14-8 lead.

After Chattanooga scored once in the bottom half, Rocket City added four more two-out runs in the ninth on consecutive RBI singles from Bartolero, Flint, Juan Flores and Thompson.

Gordon struck out nine over four innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and one walk. Gonzalez followed with two innings of one-run relief, while Chris Cortez allowed one run in 1.2 innings and earned his ninth hold.

Bryce Osmond (W, 3-3) entered with two runners aboard and two outs in the eighth, striking out Julio Carreras to escape the threat. He then worked a scoreless ninth, finishing with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings to earn the victory and improve to 3-3—Rocket City's four pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts.

Rodríguez finished with three hits and four RBI, while Bartolero and Flint each collected three hits and drove in three runs. Bartolero scored four times, and Flint extended his franchise single-season RBI record to 69.

Arjun Nimmala doubled and singled to extend his on-base streak to 16 games. Rocket City finished 11-for-21 with runners in scoring position, with 15 of its 17 RBI coming with two outs.

Rocket City continues its final regular-season series Thursday at Erlanger Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT, with Rocket City sending RHP Nate Snead (3-5, 4.61) against RHP Johnathan Harmon (8-4, 5.40) for the Lookout.
