DAYTON, OH —The West Michigan Whitecaps struggled to solve one of the Cincinnati Reds’ top pitching prospects as right-hander Mason Morris delivered five strong innings, helping the Dayton Dragons hand the ‘Caps an 8-1 loss Friday night in front of 7,811 fans at Day Air Ballpark.
Morris held West Michigan to just one hit over five innings, allowing one run while striking out five, before the Dayton bullpen retired the final 12 Whitecaps hitters of the night. The loss marked the second straight for West Michigan after opening the series with consecutive 14-run performances and leaves the ‘Caps with just two games remaining in the regular season.
Dayton jumped in front against Whitecaps starting pitcher Maddox Long, building an early advantage before breaking the game open in the middle innings. Outfielder Kien Vu delivered the biggest blow, launching his 19th home run of the season as part of a three-RBI night, while first baseman John Michael Faile added a two-run double. Outfielder Kyle Henley continued his strong series with two RBIs as the Dragons stretched their advantage to 8-0.
Meanwhile, Morris kept the Whitecaps offense quiet. West Michigan managed only one hit against the 23-year-old, who walked one and struck out five over five innings. The ‘Caps finally broke through for their only run of the night before relievers Victor Diaz and Jose Montero combined for four perfect innings to close the game, with Diaz striking out four over two frames.
Long (1-1) suffered the tough-luck loss for West Michigan, while Morris (2-0) earned the victory for Dayton. The Dragons finished with eight runs despite collecting just seven hits, while the Whitecaps were held to one run after scoring 32 times over the first three games of the series.
The loss drops West Michigan to 35-29 in the second half and 59-69 overall, while Dayton improves to 27-35 in the second half and 66-62 overall. With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Whitecaps now stand on the brink of elimination in their pursuit of the Great Lakes Loons for the Midwest League Eastern Division second-half playoff spot.
