ST. PAUL, MN (August 28, 2026) - One by one the St. Paul Saints walked back to the dugout after going down on strikes. Toledo Mud Hens starter Jackson Wolf tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and continued from there as a franchise tying-high 19 Saints went down on strikes in a 4-1 loss on Friday night at CHS Field in front of 7,721.
The first two hitters reached in the first for the Mud Hens and both came into score. Trei Cruz led off the games with a single to left-center and Jace Jung walked. A fly out moved Cruz to third, and he scored on a single to right by Josue Briceño as Jung took third and the Mud Hens took a 1-0 lead. That was followed by a John Peck RBI single, doubling the lead to 2-0.
A leadoff walk to Cal Stevenson in the second came in to score when he stole second, took third on the throwing error by catcher Noah Cardenas, and scored on a double off the right field wall by Jace Jung increasing the lead to 3-0.
Meanwhile, Wolf was mowing down the Saints. He fanned two in the first, all three outs in the second, and two each in the third through fifth to match his career-high of 11. The Saints managed to put runners at second and third with one out in the fourth, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
The Mud Hens built on their lead in the sixth when Stevenson led off with a hustle double to right-center, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Siani, and scored on a wild pitch upping the lead to 4-0.
The lone run for the Saints came in the ninth when Kala’i Rosario led off with a double to left-center. With one out Tanner Schobel hit a grounder to short and Peck elected to throw to third, but threw it into his dugout for a two base error allowing Rosario to score making it 4-1. That was followed by a strikeout, the 19th of the game which tied the Saints franchise record for most strikeouts in a nine-inning game. The only other time they did that was May 30, 2021 at Iowa.
The Saints struck out at least once in every inning and all 10 hitters that got into the game went down on strikes at least once.
The same two teams meet in game five of a six-game series on Saturday night at CHS Field at 6:37 p.m. The Saints send RHP Trent Baker (4-3, 5.10) to the mound against Mud Hens RHP Dylan File (6-8, 5.20). The game can be seen on the CW Twin Cities, MLB.TV, MiLB.com, and the Bally Sports Live app, and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM, all presented by Northland Ford Dealers.
