Spectacular Sunday: Kloffenstein, Homers Lead SWB to 7-3 Win

A Baby Bomber blast from Yanquiel Fernández gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the lead in the bottom of the first. With two outs, J.C. Escarra singled, and Marco Luciano walked before Fernández unloaded for his 25th homer of the year, matching a career high and giving the RailRiders a 3-0 lead.
Lehigh Valley cut into the deficit in the top of the second against RailRiders starter Adam Kloffenstein. An RBI single by Dylan Moore scored Gabriel Rincones Jr., closing the gap to two.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Abrahan Gutierrez started the offense with a solo shot to right field for a three-run advantage. After Duke Ellis walked, Jarred Kelenic tripled off the center-field wall and scored on an Anthony Volpe RBI single, extending the lead to five runs.
Gutierrez’s doubled for his second hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring later from third on a Kelenic sac fly for a 7-1 cushion.
Kameron Misner’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth capped the scoring.
The RailRiders outscored the IronPigs 45-10 in their five victories. Volpe went 11-for-21 with eight runs, three home runs, and six RBIs, while Fernandez went 9-for-22, scoring five runs, blasting three homers, hitting two doubles, and knocking in nine over the set. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also turned 11 double plays in the series, including a season-high four on Sunday.
Kloffenstein (4-11) worked 6.0 frames, allowing one unearned run on two hits, striking out four in the quality start. Yankees Rehabber Clarke Schmidt threw 23 pitches, 13 for strikes, over 2.0 scoreless frames. Lehigh Valley starter Drake Fellows (5-4) tossed 4.0 innings, surrendering six runs on seven hits in defeat.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre travels to Rochester to face the Red Wings in a battle for first place in the International League standings. The RailRiders return to PNC Field on Tuesday, September 15, for the final regular-season series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
