JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Seven punch outs over five-plus innings from Luis Palacios was not enough as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Gwinnett Stripers 8-0 Wednesday night at VyStar Ballpark.

Locked in scoreless tie, Gwinnett (72-68, 34-32) opened the scoring in the sixth. Jim Jarvis led off the inning with a three-bagger and scored on an RBI single from David McCabe. Jordan Groshans followed with a double, pushing McCabe to third. With runners in scoring position, Jośe Azócar hit a two-run single giving the Stripers a 3-0 advantage.

The Stripers padded their lead against Jacksonville (70-69, 28-37) in the eighth. Lizandro Espinoza was hit by a pitch to start the frame. A stolen base coupled with an error pushed Espinoza to third. In the ensuing at-bat, McCabe hit a sac fly plating Gwinnett’s fourth run.

Gwinnett added four insurance runs in the ninth. A couple of walks to Maverick Handley and Jarvis put runners on first and second. Espinoza loaded the bases with a single and McCabe (3) crushed a grand slam that extended the Striper’s lead 8-0.

Jacksonville and Gwinnett continue their series with Thursday’s 7:05 p.m. contest. RHP Jace Beck (1-1, 5.29 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Jumbo Shrimp and the Stripers will counter with RHP Garrett Baumann (2-4, 8.45 ERA).
