Dayton, Ohio—Kyle Henley went 4 for 4 and keyed a six-run eighth inning as the Dayton Dragons came from behind to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps 9-4 on Thursday night. The win was the first for the Dragons in the series after back-to-back wins by West Michigan.

A crowd of 7,752 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

Recap: The Dragons took the lead in the second inning when Damian Ruiz was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on Kyle Henley’s single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Ascanio.

West Michigan got two runs in the third inning on a long home run by Beau Ankeney with a man on base. Ankeney’s home run hit off the Dragon above the video board in left field to make it 2-1. The Whitecaps added another run in the top of the fourth before Dayton’s Tyson Lewis connected on a solo home run in the bottom of the same inning to get the Dragons back within a run at 3-2. The homer was Lewis’ seventh of the year.

West Michigan tacked on another run in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-2. The run came across on an unusual play. The Whitecaps had the bases loaded with one out when Henley, the center fielder, made an outstanding diving catch of a fly ball. The runner at second was doubled off the base, but before the out was recorded, the runner from third tagged and touched home plate before the out at second base was recorded, and on a timing play, the run counted.

The Dragons got a run in the sixth when Alfredo Alcantara walked and scored from first on a double down the left field line by Henley to make it 4-3.

The Dragons still trailed by a run before exploding for a huge eighth inning. Lewis led off the inning with a hustling infield single on a high chopper to shortstop. After Damian Ruiz sacrificed Lewis to second, and after Justin Lebron struck out, Henley lined a double to the right field corner to bring in Lewis and tie the game. Ascanio followed with a looping single to right to drive in Henley and give the Dragons a 5-4 lead. Two batter later, John Michael Faile delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-4, and Ryan McCrystal followed with a two-run double to cap off the six-run frame and give the Dragons a 9-4 lead.

Henley credited the added motivation of having family in for the game to his outstanding performance.

"I got family in town. My grandma, my grandparents came to see me today. It was the first time [they got to] see me play in a long, long time. It was awesome…we’ve got a lot of new guys. We're just out here just trying to learn each other I think that when we click it's something special and I think that if we keep doing what we're doing, by the time playoffs come and the end of this week comes, I think we'll be ready and hopefully can bring home a ring."

Dragons reliever David Lorduy worked the final two innings, striking out six batters without allowing a run.

The Dragons finished the night with 11 hits. Henley had two doubles and two singles to raise his batting average to .357 in 13 games played with the Dragons. Lewis had two hits including a home run. Faile had two hits and two runs batted in.
