Baysox Hang on For Wednesday Night Win in Richmond Despite Squirrely Finish

Richmond, VA (September 9, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, jumped out early and hung on late for an 8-7 Wednesday night win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

Chesapeake (36-28, 65-67) grabbed an 8-0 lead by the third inning. Baysox leadoff hitter Griff O’Ferrall, who was born and raised in Richmond, crushed Chesapeake’s eleventh leadoff homer of the season to start the festivities on Wednesday. O’Ferrall sailed his seventh home run of the season out to left field in front of extended friends and family, following his third-career four-hit performance on Tuesday.

The Baysox sit second in all Minor League Baseball with their eleven first-inning leadoff home runs this season.

Two batters later, Ethan Anderson followed a Vance Honeycutt walk with a two-run homer out to left field. Anderson’s long ball was his twenty-first of the season with Chesapeake. After also going deep on Tuesday night’s series opener, Anderson has now homered in back-to-back games for the sixth time this season. He had five career professional homers entering this season.

Chesapeake did the rest of their scoring in a five-run third inning. Four-consecutive singles started the frame, including a bases-loaded, two-run single from Aron Estrada. One of two Richmond errors in the inning brough home another run. Later in the inning, Colin Tuft’s two-run double capped off the scoring and chased Flying Squirrels’ left-handed starter Charlie McDaniel (L, 3-5), who allowed all eight Baysox runs.

On the flip side, Chesapeake southpaw Joseph Dzierwa logged his fifth scoreless start at Double-A on Wednesday. Dzierwa (W, 4-1) struck out back-to-back batters to strand a leadoff double at third base in the first inning. He erased his lone walk allowed in the third on a double-play ball and allowed just one single the remainder of his five frames, finishing with four strikeouts.

Dzierwa’s 2.29 ERA with the Baysox this season is second-best of any Double-A pitcher with at least 75 innings at the level.

Richmond made things interesting late, after getting on the board with a run in the sixth inning, the Flying Squirrels scored three more on a trio of hits in the eighth. Tavian Josenberger threw out a runner at the plate to cap off the eighth inning.

In the ninth, Richmond loaded the bases on a walk, single, and error with no one out. Chesapeake brought in left-hander Micah Ashman to try and see the Baysox through the late jam. With one out, Dayson Croes emptied the bases on a three-run double – his third two-bagger and fourth hit of the night – to make it a one-run game. A groundout pushed Croes to third base as the tying run, but Ashman (S, 5) struck out Sabin Ceballos to strand the tying run at third and help the Baysox hang on.

The Baysox continue their final series of the 2026 season in Richmond on Thursday night. Right-hander Anthony Eyanson (AA: 6-1, 1.80 ERA) takes the ball for Chesapeake, against Flying Squirrels right-hander Niko Mazza (AA: 0-1, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm from CarMax Park.
