Charlotte Sneaks Past Buffalo 5-4 for Second Straight Win

Knights Turn the Tables with Eighth Inning Rally of their Own

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Knights had dropped two straight games entering their final homestand of the season. CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Knights had dropped two straight games entering their final homestand of the season. In both of those defeats, the Knights saw late leads slip away in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Tuesday’s series opening win against the Buffalo Bisons, Charlotte delivered their own eighth inning rally and the result was a 5-4 victory.

Starting pitcher Jonathan Cannon went six innings and his only blemish was a solo Home Run allowed in the top of the first. Jake Cave gave the Knights a 2-1 lead with a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Rikuu Nishida added to the advantage in the fifth. Nishida ripped a two-out RBI single into left field that plated Dru Baker from third base.

The Knights led 3-1 until the Bisons hit a pair of homers in the top of the eighth inning. Despite trailing 4-3, Charlotte kept their poise and mounted a comeback in the bottom half.

Nishida led off the frame with an infield single and took third on Cave’s double into right field. The next batter, Tim Elko, hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Nishida scored and when the throw home escaped, Cave trotted in for the game-winning run.

Shane Smith faced the minimum in the top of the ninth and closed the door for his first save of the season.

The Knights continue to stay alive for the final International League playoff spot. Charlotte will look to keep stacking wins with Game Three of the series slated for Thursday at 7:04pm ET.
