HARRISBURG, Pa. – Despite another strong start from lefty Nick Dombkowski, Altoona dropped their series opener to Harrisburg, 4-3, on Tuesday night.
Facing top Nationals prospect Jarlin Susana, who threw 16 of his 45 pitches at 100 mph or above, the Curve grabbed two first inning runs. Murf Gray drove in Titus Dumitru with a double into the right field corner. After a hit batsman put runners on first and third with two outs, Lonnie White Jr. reached on an error by Harrisburg’s shortstop to bring Gray home and make it 2-0.
Callan Moss slammed a solo homer with one out in the third inning off Susana, marking his tenth of the season. Moss joins White Jr., Dumitru and Will Taylor as Curve hitters with at least ten home runs this season.
Harrisburg got just one run off Nick Dombkowski in the first inning before he dialed in and retired 10-of-12 hitters with a pair of double play balls mixed in. Harrisburg put two runners on in the fifth inning before Dombkowski struck out rehabbing Nationals outfielder James Wood with a fastball to strand a pair and hold the lead at 3-1.
Dombkowski left with the lead after five innings, allowing just one run on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts. He has gone 16.0 innings since his last walk with Altoona.
The Senators plated two runs off the Curve bullpen in the seventh inning to take the 4-3 lead. Sacrifice flies from Kevin Made and Devin Fitz-Gerald. Jaycob Deese was charged with both runs in the inning after allowing a pair of hits to start the frame.
Sean Sullivan covered the final two innings, allowing two baserunners in an outing for the first time with Altoona (five appearances).
Altoona continues their series with Harrisburg on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. LHP Connor Oliver will start on the mound for the Curve with RHP Josh Randall slated to start for Harrisburg.
